Fast & Furious 9 Cast Enthuses About Female-Centric Spinoff
The cast of Fast & Furious 9 looks forward to a female spinoff as the profitable franchise moves forward, and star Jordana Brewster is excited.
The cast of Fast & Furious 9 is eager to move past the male characters as the sole focus of the franchise and make the films more female-centric moving forward, including approaching the possibility of a spinoff. The series of nine films followed a series of core male characters who were the focus of the action and pushed the storyline forward. However, the strong female characters are generally supportive of the men and have not had the opportunity, thus far, to lead their own storylines.
The Fast & Furious films have progressed a long way from their initial installments where hijacking trucks and street races were the norms. The franchise's popularity has allowed it to morph into a hero-based sequence of films, but there is still more growth within the franchise, including giving the heroic women their own chance to be featured in a solo project. In the caption of a 2020 Instagram post, Vin Diesel revealed that the Fast female protagonist-driven spinoff was an idea he created in 2017, and the pitch was made in 2020 to studio heads.

During a Sirius XM Town Hall hosted by Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham, F9 cast members Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson said they are ready for the women of the franchise to have their day. "The girls need a spin-off," said Ludacris. "That's what needs a spin-off. All the bad a**, kick-a** women that are in this film, that's who deserves it." Brewster had a more in-depth take on the topic:
That would be awesome, I've heard those rumors. Yeah, I think that would be incredible. Think about all the people we could bring back, Eva Mendes, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Michelle Rodriguez. It would be really, really cool. I can't speak to the discussions but I think it would be awesome so fingers crossed.
In 2019, Charlize Theron was considered the lead for a potential spinoff film built around The Fate of the Furious villain Cipher. However, the broad task of changing the focus of the films from male-dominated to more female-centric will likely occur sooner than later due to the current climate of equal representation for all genders and as the franchise remains a hot property for Universal.
